Jenn, a mom with three children, had addiction issues for much of her life and struggled with self-worth because of the dysfunctional family she grew up in.  She was told, and began to believe, that she wasn’t good enough, she wasn’t loveable or loved, and she didn’t deserve love.  Jenn lived in a very dark place for a long time.

Experts say Washington State is decades behind the times when it comes to its treatment of some of its most vulnerable citizens – people with developmental disabilities.

Andrew, a Ugandan native, was born in an impoverished family, being the last born out of three children. Andrew stated his parents were not educated and that each member of his family’s education did not go beyond the fifth grade.

I think all in all our team came away with more than we gave. Each of us felt the impact these homes would make in the lives of these families. Children who would grow up and have christmases in these houses. They will hold birthdays and anniversaries and someday even grandchildren.

TJ came to Rebound hostile and angry. Police had removed his son from his home due to neglect, and the boy was placed in foster care. As an older parent, TJ’s physical health and mental acuity were issues that in part prevented him from properly parenting Little T.

Recently, a client ("Joan") entered our program with her three children. She had been living with her husband, who had become verbally and physically abusive towards her, and she decided that she was no longer safe in her home. She had no other family or friends with whom she could stay, and no other resources to rent a place for her family on her own.

At this time, Jenna was pregnant and caring for her 1 year old daughter alone, and relying on the last bits of generosity from an acquaintance to maintain her "shed". 

New Hope for Girls, African Road partners in Tanzania, is a special family home where 34 girls who were victims of modern slavery, child marriage or who had been left to the streets, find love, healing, education and a new life. The New Hope for Girls family faced a house move in early August when their landlord sold the home they had been renting.

Joseph had been in over 40 different placements over the years. He did not have a healthy support system and lacked some basic life skills. After running from his last placement, Northwest Youth Services' PAD provided emergency housing and case management to Joseph during his stay. Most importantly, the PAD provided Joseph with a time where he could focus on being a kid and work on his own goals.

Before I came to the Mission, I was in tatters.  My biggest obstacle was being abandoned by my family. I was in dire need of medical and financial assistance. I felt insecure, upset, depressed, and out of balance. I was half dead.

Sean Humphrey House is a non-profit adult family home located in Bellingham, WA that provides safe housing and 24-hour personal care services to low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and who often suffer from other diseases, disabilities and varying forms of mental illness.

Darlyn was born underweight and it was very hard for her mother to nurse her. Her mother, Maria, noticed that Darlyn was not gaining weight or growing as she should be. She took her to a local health clinic and they detected that her height and weight were below normal.

2roofs partnership story: Since the aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide, the women and girls of the Togetherness Orphan Cooperative have supported each other as sisters and mentors. In their rural community, there are few jobs for women, and most live on less than $1 a day.

Esther is one year old and from Escuintla, Guatemala. Her mother was previously in an abusive relationship and is raising Esther on her own without any financial or physical support from Esther’s father. Due to malnourishment, digestive issues and an upper respiratory illness, Esther was referred to Casa Jackson by her doctor.

LYDIA PLACE - Chantel's Journey

After entering her first program, Chantel transitioned in and out of community programs and shelters, only to find herself stuck in a cycle of homelessness. Living in poverty, without any family support to help get her back on her feet, Chantel bounced from housing programs, to unstable housing, to friend’s couches. This instability resulted in Chantel losing custody of her older children, a devastating and painful wakeup call.
