Here’s the story of Xander, a GED pursuer helped by the Northwest Youth Services.

“Xander” moved to Bellingham from out of state, looking to start his adult life in Whatcom County. He visited The Ground Floor daily for resources and looking to start work. After securing a job at a local processing plant, Xander realized his long-term goal: completing the GED he had started out of state. He returned to NWYS’ Vocational team with a plan and questions: how could he do this and what would transfer? The Vocational team was able to connect him to a local high school completion program and advise him on how to access the local community college’s BFET program. Taking that step to continue his education might have been seriously delayed or impossible without community referrals and navigation from the Vocational team. Now, Xander is pursuing his GED and looking at a local culinary arts program.

Over the past year, NWYS’ Diversion services, funded through Washington State’s Department of Commerce, has been able to overcome the biggest barrier to youth entering housing: upfront costs for renting. Application fees, security deposits, and first and last month rents, averaging $2,000-$4,000, are an insurmountable barrier for young people, who may earn enough for rent but not for these costs. NWYS was able to use this new service to connect up to 16 youth with permanent housing, just by overcoming this cash-based barrier. For one young adult, it allowed her to stop living in a hotel and transition into a safe housing situation, where her young daughter could have her own bed for the first time. For other young adults, it was sometimes connecting them with a bike to get to work on time, a bed for their new apartment, or a minor medical device, such as a wrist brace, that improved quality of life.
