Dear Sean and Rob,

Thank you for 2Roof’s generous investment and support in the impactful Batwa home building initiative. The organization ASSEJEBA, led by Changemaker Evariste Ndikumana, with the support of African Road has the goal to build brick homes for Batwa people, changing lives, one house at a time. Evariste and his team first identified nine Batwa women living in Gahombo Village in Kayanza Province, Burundi, all who have been widowed.

African Road holds a deep partnership with three Batwa villages, where most families live in makeshift grass shelters. These shelters are extremely susceptible to the elements, particularly fires and heavy rains, which leave the Batwa with vulnerable housing that requires extensive time and resources to rebuild. The building of sturdy, brick homes brings powerful impact, long-term security and protection, and ongoing community stability. This also means there is plenty of opportunity to make a powerful impact with this investment.

African Road supporters provided housing funds for seven of the nine widowed women, leaving the two remaining women waiting and hoping for homes of their own too. Your recent financial support meant that one of these women and her family now have a new brick house.

Césalie Mutenga and her grandchildren send their heartfelt thanks to you for their new house and the significant step forward toward health, security and peace of mind. Meet Césalie and her family... She shares her background: "My father is Musarasi and my mother is Mpongerbansi. I was born in Kayanza province, Gahombo commune, Businde Colline in 1955.”

Cesalie shares the impact of 2Roofs funding: “I am now totally free from stress and fear. When I had a straw hut it did not even have a door. During the night, we used to keep the fire burning in the house to warm the hut and I was afraid it would catch fire and we would all die in it. I slept with fear in my stomach all night, always thinking about what would happen if the hut caught fire at night when I and my children were sleeping inside it. Now, we will be able to sleep peacefully and without any fear.”

Césalie and her seven grandchildren live in her new house. The security of a brick home brings the whole family peace of mind and hope for the future.
